Giving Tuesday is less than a month away and we think it’s important to talk about why Generation All is participating in #ILGive this November. As you may know, almost 50 percent of Chicago public high school students attend neighborhood public high schools, and these schools are the only ones that guarantee a free, public high school education to students of all abilities and backgrounds. Yet an inequitable system of opening, closing, and funding schools has left many neighborhood public high schools woefully under-resourced. Further, as some Chicago neighborhoods have lost population, enrollment in Chicago Public Schools has declined. This means schools have to make do with less, while striving to meet the needs of their students and provide them with a top quality education.
More than ever, marketing efforts make a difference on enrollment, as more schools are utilizing social media, advertisements, and other strategies to recruit, many of our neighborhood high schools find it hard to keep up. GoCPS, the new CPS common enrollment website, has made it easier for some families to apply for high school but has also increased the competition among schools for students. Most neighborhood public high schools simply do not have the staff or resources to compete. This is where Generation All comes in. We hope to raise $3,000 from #ILGive, to host workshops on community engagement, recruitment and enrollment strategies for Chicago neighborhood public high schools.
