What can our city and communities do to revitalize neighborhood public high schools so that ALL students experience a top quality education?

Giving Tuesday is ONE WEEK away!

Giving Tuesday is only ONE WEEK away! Generation All’s mission is to expand equity in education by supporting, investing in, and advocating for neighborhood public high schools and their students. We believe that strong neighborhood public schools help build stronger communities and contribute to the vitality of Chicago. Neighborhood public high schools have an especially important role to play in Chicago’s education ecosystem. They are the most open and accessible, serve almost half of all CPS high school students, and are the only schools that can guarantee students—regardless of academic ability or background—a high school spot. Shouldn’t they be the best schools our city has to offer?
Here are three strategies we propose for revitalizing Chicago’s neighborhood public high schools:
Practice: Make neighborhood high schools exciting, supportive, and safe places of learning that prepare students now and for their future. How? Use student-centered learning to make high schools innovative and connected to young people’s lives. Transform schools through the sustainable community school modelInvest in the educators so they have time to plan, learn, and work together.
Public Engagement: Change the narrative. Get to know neighborhood high schools; volunteer, partner with them. Participate in your local school council, attend CPS board meetings and push for transparency and public engagement in decision-making about schools.
Policy: Implement policies that promote equity and uplift rather than undermine neighborhood high schools. These include equitable, evidence-based funding, less punitive evaluation, and transparency in district decision-making.
This summer, Generation All partnered with Chicago Cares to bring almost 4,000 volunteers through their annual Serve-a-thon to 15 neighborhood high schools. The result? Approximately $3 million in facilities and beautification projects. Pride and excitement. This fall, we have been co-leading a campaign to reimagine racial and education equity in Chicago. This winter, with our partners, we will bring the ideas of thousands of Chicagoans to the mayoral and aldermanic candidates.
